At Kasa Guane we believe in positive tourism.
Becoming a volunteer is a great way to have a positive impact on the people and places that you pass on your travels.
There are many ways to do this but here at the hostel we have three main ways to volunteer :
- Our foundation, Goals for Peace Colombia Bucaramanga.
- Teaching conversational English to kids at the Cooperative College Bucaramanga
- Helping out at the hostal
1. Goals for Peace Colombia
Goals for Peace International is an organization that aims to help improve the lives of people that do not have the same opportunities in life that we do. We are currently working in Bucaramanga, Colombia and in the Philippines.
Kasa Guane set up Goals for Peace Bucaramanga in October 2012 using money from local donations and help from friends. After working successfully for 9 months we legally registered the foundation in July 2013.
We volunteer in an area in the North of Bucaramanga called Olas 2. In October 2012 around 25 children attended the project, this has now grown to around 50 (August 2013). The children that come every Saturday between 8am and 1 pm are boys and girls between the ages of 4 and 16
We usually start the day with a warm up followed by a catch up chat and some fruits and refreshments. Then we do a stretch and warm up followed by football training exercises and have a match. We also do activities in things like arts and crafts, board games and basic English classes for those who aren’t as interested in the football.
We use football as a way to engage and encourage the children to attend but the main focus of the project is to teach and enforce positive moral values and promote positive development.
If you would like to visit the project with us and volunteer please ask at the reception for more information and to confirm your place. You can help us in a number of ways such as; admin tasks and organizing the equipment, preparing an activity for the kids, helping with fundraising and marketing or just being there to help out on the day. If you have any particular skills or talents that you would like to share with the kids please let us know and we can arrange a session or workshop.
Please see the video at the bottom of this page for a better idea of what we do.
2. Working with the Cooperative College Bucaramanga
As of February 2012 we have been working wtih the Cooperative College Bucaramanga on a programme called “Puente” which is funded by Rotary and works to help children from less privaledged backgrounds learn English with native speakers.
You can help by going to the school any weekday and to volunteer and help the kids with their English. It’s a great way to encourage them to learn and bring some fun into learning a foreign language.
3. Working at the hostal
The previous two options are working with social projects helping the people of Bucaramanga, this option is you helping us . We are always looking for reliable, trustworthy and positive people to help us out in the hostel.
If you would like any more information on any of these opportunities please get in touch with us at;
